The 5 points of Executive Coaching

Okay – I must have hit a nerve!

Thanks for those of you who got in touch to ask for more clarification from our blog – A 9-Point Summary of Executive Coaching

I’ll outline what an Executive Coaching conversation might look like below. Respectfully though, I’m going to water it down a bit.

This is really our secret-sauce and our team goes through 150 hours a year of training and support to make it look easy. When we work with companies, regardless of size, our job as professional coaches is to give you the essence of what we’ve learned and practiced so many times.

When a FocalPoint Coach shows an executive how to use Coaching  as a management style, its for the purposes of

  • building a stronger team
  • Developing the talents of others around them
  • Leverage
  • Hitting targets by getting everyone aligned

1. Aim for Clarity towards a goal

A great coaching conversation begins with a search for clarity. This means a lot of listening and few great questions. Coaching isn’t telling, although that comes later….

2. Simplify and Clarify the “situation today”

What might be called the coach and the coachee, will look different in every company.

Here are a few examples (just for conversation)

Coach

“Coachee”

President or CEO

V.P. Level professionals

V.P. of Operations (as an example)

Director of Logistics and Shipping

Director of Logistics and Shipping

Warehouse Manager

Warehouse Manager

Shift Lead, Shippers and Receivers, Front Line Team,

We teach the coaching language that guides the coach ( above) to have the coaching conversation with the coachee ( above)

3. Create a plan moving forward and get commitment.

Feedback form the clients we work says this is the fun part of coaching. This is where the conversation involves creativity, what-if’s, past experiences , lessons learned etc.

4. Stay involved and encourage your people.

As the coach, you want to stay involved and watch the plan unfold.

5. Know when to step in to adjust the course.

You’ve been where the coachee is now. You can read the situation and the players. Knowing when to step in and do a stop and reassess is critical in getting the plan to come to life.

Not only does coaching drive results, it makes being a leader much more rewarding.

Ok- that's it readers. This is the 5- point plan for Executive Coaching. It’s the best path for finding peoples potential and developing their hidden potential.

Those of you who follow us closely will note it's a bit different than the path we use for coaching smaller businesses. ( smaller being <1 million to 50 million)

I hope todays blog was a valuable use of your time. Thanks for reading.

In a few days I’m off to meet Brian Tracy for our regular monthly meeting – He’s in Asia right now and I’m sure he’ll have some great stories to tell about the growth over there!

Lets go change the world!
