Down Time Management: Take a Break
This week’s FocalPoint Business Coaching Challenge is:
“How do I help business coaching clients to define their brand?”
Brand is such an important aspect of running a business, like a mission statement it is what you can always go back to to clarify, to define and ev
“On a regular basis, you have to stand back and take stock of yourself and what you’re doing. You have to stop the clock and do some serious thinking about who you are and where you are going.”
-Brian Tracy
Imagine that – coffee breaks are important.
There’s a study that shows that taking a rest after learning about something sticks it in your memory more effectively. That means if you’ve been in a meeting, been learning new material, applying new processes or reassessing new ideas, then it’s a good idea to stop thinking for a while. Let the information be digested and absorbed. Then you can apply it better.

Another study actually showed that rats that learned a new task were much more capable of repeating it if they took some down time after the initial learning.
The big key to taking a break is to actually stop putting stuff into your brain.
How many of you sit down and watch some television or check your email when you have a break? Nuh-uh! That is NOT a break.
Even though those activities may seem relaxing they are not really giving your brain a break – there’s still input.
A walk, meditation, even a 10-minute power nap is going to give you better performance, clearer thinking and enough downtime to process everything that you’ve picked up during the day.
Giving your brain that kind of break gets you back in control of your thoughts.
How About a Vacation?
What about the big breaks? Vacation time? How does missing work possibly get you ahead?
There’s a paper on this at healthyorganizations.net that’s just awesome.
They go into detail about how much more effective a real vacation is for employees. The break from work can improve mental state and prevent lost hours due to illness, stress and family issues.
Not only that, but there’s a link between coronary heart disease and people who don’t take vacations.
So be good to your heart, your brain, your family and yourself – take a break.
