Executives research business coaching. Is it for me?
December 7, 2011 — FocalPoint Bus...
Well, is it for you, I don’t know...
But over the last few months I’ve spoken with a number of Senior Executives who have been laid off, let go, downsized, restructured etc. What do you do when you’re in your 50’s and looking for a new career?
The answer for some is that they are just done with corporate and ready to start their own consulting or coaching business.
So, I thought you might like to read a short bio of the kind of people who consider business coaching.

- Senior Executive # 1: “Business owner looking for new opportunities”.
- This gentleman started life as an Electrical Engineer and then moved into Software and Support. Some years ago he moved into Telecommunications Sales. He did well there and was part of the ownership team when the company eventually sold. He wants to re-invent himself.
- Senior Executive #2: “Looking for new opportunities”.
- She has a very interesting background in HR and has also been in the US Navy as active and reserve duty for 20 years. She is now retired from the Medical Service Corps.
- She came from HR for a company that sold medical software. Her company was acquired and with the uncertainty, she wants to move on. She is looking for control over her destiny and pride in what she’s doing.
- Senior Executive #3: “I’m leaving corporate”.
- This gentleman has 26 years in Sales and Marketing roles at a global consumer products brand. He has always been known as “the builder”. His company is actively restructuring and consolidating. He’s been offered a new position that would require him to move his family. With the uncertainty, he just can’t take the risk. So, he wants to leverage his background and wants to have confidence in building something for the future, for himself.
- Senior Executive #4: "Sales Executive, VP"
- He has a background as a sales executive with National Food brands. Well in speaking to him, they are really global food brands, but regardless, big names. The problem he had with his job was the he traveled up to 90% of a month- at someone else’s whim. He is looking for control over his destiny.
- Senior Executive #5: This was a fun call! (as they all are...)
- This gent is a commercial real estate broker who wants to have a new look at his huge database and add value to it. He’s a really well connected guy and wants to have more impact locally, by adding new services.
- Senior Executive #6: "Aerospace Executive"
- He comes from a consulting background in aerospace. He also worked with small and medium sized businesses. He’s a consultant who wants to do things differently.
- Senior Executive #7: "Automotive Industry Executive"
- A 50-year-old plus exec who owns and runs a number of auto collision outlets. He is a real straight shooter who loves business and loves helping others.
Well that’s just a look at a few of the calls I had last month. I talk to a lot of executives who are looking for "what do I need to do next". I really hope that this helps to give you perspective if you're in a search for yourself.
Have a great day!
