Networking Strategies for retired or laid-off Senior Executives
![]()
If you’re a retired or laid off executive, it may have been a while since you’ve gone out and networked. As business coaches, we use this strategy a lot, and on our team, we’re very specific as to
- How we network
- Where to Network
- How to get the most out of Networking
Targets: Where can I network?
This is one of the most important questions to ask when planning your networking strategy.
You should expect that the places you are networking when you start, are NOT the places you will network once you are more established and know more about the various groups in your market.
In order to find the most powerful places to Network, we start by really thinking about who our perfect target market is and who we are, as a coach. Make sure you set aside some time to consider these questions before you step foot into a Networking event!
Here are some places to start your networking strategy:
Service Clubs.
Asking for business outright in Service Clubs is generally a no-no. The mission of these groups is generally ”Service before Self”, so that joining just so you can prospect the members is frowned upon.
However- you will meet the top movers and shakers in your city ….
Leads Clubs
These are clubs that are created specifically for the exchange of leads. You are generally expected to share a lead at every meeting. These are excellent clubs if you come prepared.
Skills Development
Toastmasters is an excellent skills development club. It is focused on training people to speak professionally. Many of the members will be business owners, or influential up and coming executives.
Local Business Clubs
Every city has some sort of Chamber of Commerce, or Business Improvement Associations. Simply Google your city for the info.
Build your Own!
There are a number of websites that allow you to build your own networking group, or quickly find existing groups. The best site for this is www.meetup.com.
Both Eyes Open
Look in your local business paper for events or meetings that are taking place. Is it a group or association you’d like to join?
Once you’ve figured out “Where” to go, the next step is simply to GO!
Networking is quite a rewarding experience, but you do need to decide if it’s a marketing strategy, or a social strategy. Once you know that, you can tackle the event with confidence!
